Speech-language pathology

Pediatric Speech Therapy

At Coral Care, we make it easy to connect with local speech-language pathologists for in-home appointments for your child in two weeks or less. Our providers are experts at working with children, whether that means helping them communicate effectively, or other specific concerns like feeding and swallowing.

Speech-language pathologists can help with a variety of concerns

Delayed speech

If you have concerns that your child is behind in hitting their speech milestones, a speech-language pathologist is the right provider for you! An evaluation with a speech therapist can be the first step to helping your child achieve positive outcomes.

Feeding and swallowing issues

Babies, toddlers, and young children often experience difficulty with their eating habits. An SLP can help by providing various types of therapy to improve a young child's eating process. Feeding and swallowing therapy can help with sensory issues, as well as oral motor challenges.

Limited vocabulary

If your child speaks but has an overly limited vocabulary or struggles to understand and use words in conversation, a speech therapist may be able to help improve this area.

Social skills for interacting with others

Children who have trouble initiating and maintaining conversations, or have difficulty understanding social cues, may need speech therapy. This may include difficulty making eye contact, taking turns in conversation, or understanding nonverbal cues.

Articulation disorders

Stuttering, slurred speech, lisps, and other speech impediments can call benefit from seeing a speech therapist. If your child has trouble producing certain sounds or displays any of the common speech impediments listed above, seeing a speech therapist can help them improve their communication and confidence as a result.

What does pediatric speech therapy entail?

Learn about the process of pediatric speech therapy, from initial evaluation to ongoing care and therapy sessions.

Evaluation

This is a time for your SLP to meet your child and assess any issues they may be having. You should be present the whole time and can give information regarding medical history, milestones, difficulties, etc.

Play Therapy

Depending on age, your speech-language pathologist may play games with your child to help get them to engage. Play is a great tool for pediatric speech therapists because it helps make the evaluation and follow-up sessions fun, while the games will also help your specialist evaluate for any delays, disorders, or other issues.

Ask Questions

During the evaluation remember that you are encouraged to be present and ask questions! We highly encourage parents to be involved in the process as that typically leads to better outcomes.

Treatment Plan

After the evaluation your SLP will discuss their findings  with you and propose a treatment plan. This will often include recommended goals, session frequency, duration of treatment, and even referrals for other treatment if speech therapy won't address the concerns highlighted.

Schedule On-going Sessions

Your Coral Care SLP will work with you to schedule regular at-home sessions depending on your availability. At-home treatments tend to work best for both the patient and provider and can fit seamlessly into your day.

Typical Sessions

The actual session activities will vary depending on your child's age and specific needs. For younger children the sessions may include games and exercises that include "guess who", games based on sounds and specific letters, singing and rhyming activities, storytelling, and many more tools that your specific speech therapist may employ.

Goals & Milestones

Your speech therapist will also probably give you exercises you can do with your child to help encourage more practice and improvement! It can take some time to see progress, however if you stay consistent with your sessions and regularly do at-home exercises with your child, you will see improvements in your child's communication skills.
